James Woods

Jimmy was born in St Louis and moved to Seattle at an early age. There he began his music education with piano lessons while in elementary school and continued in junior and senior high school bands learning clarinet and saxophone.  He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force Band. Jimmy earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Music from Los Angeles City College. He also earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in sociology form California State University at Los Angeles. He was employed as Contract Management Supervisor for the County of Los Angeles when he retired in November of 1992. Jimmy is a licensed Real Estate Broker in Alaska.

Jimmy Traveled in over 20 states, four cities in Japan and spent 5 months in London England. During his travels he played with such bands as: Homer Carter Jazz Band, Johnny Otis, Don Johnson, the Gerald Wilson Big Band, Horace Tapscott Quartet, Jimmy Beasley Rhythm and Blues Band, Roy Milton Rhythm and Blues Band and the Chico Hamilton Jazz Quartet. He worked with various road artists including Lena Horne, Lowell Fulsom, Jimmy Witherspoon and Big Maybelle.

Special appearances and awards include: Command Performance before the Queen of England with the Lena Horne entourage; featured soloist on the Johnny Carson Show with the Chico Hamilton Jazz Quartet; featured soloist at the Monterey Jazz Festival with Gerald Wilson’s Big Band; Special guest on Lloyd Thaxton  and Steve Allen television shows; performed at the Talk of the Town Supper Club in London, England;  performed at Los Angeles area clubs such as: the Coconut Grove. Shelley’s Manne Hole, The Troubador. Howard Ramsey’s Light House, Strip City and Marty’s. He was the winner in a International Jazz Critics’ Poll coordinated by Downbeat Magazine and included input from jazz critics from 20 foreign countries in the category “Alto Saxophonist Deserving of Wider Recognition.”

Recordings include: Composer, arranger of the music for 2 albums on which Jimmy as also the featured artist while under exclusive contract with Contemporary Records; recorded several albums as featured soloist with the Gerald Wilson Big Band, the Teddy Edwards Jazz Group, the Roy Milton Rhythm and Blues Band and the Joe Gordon Jazz Group.
