As LBJ (our pres along time ago) used to say:  It's with a heavy heart that we announce John Wheatly is leaving Midnight Starlight.  Actually he and his wife, Mary are moving to Spokane WA to live.  John's been with us so long I thought it would be impossible to replace him. Indeed, we're going to miss John. His old school style and let's have a good time personality have made it lots of fun.

It's with great pleasure that I get to announce Bill Barry as our new saxophonist. A long time friend, Bill has been playing with us regularly over the past 2 years. It will be great to have him with us full time. There will be a bio of Bill very soon in the players section.

If you're going to the big craft fair at the Anchorage Museum on Thanksgiving weekend, we'll be performing Sunday November 28 for 2 hours 1pm - 3. It's the maiden voyage our new singers  Rebecca and Elena

Meet our new singers:

Elena Gonzales is a Freshman music student at UAA. Her father is an avid jazz fan and that means Elena grew up listening and singing standards. It’s given her a depth and maturity that’s uncommon for someone so young.

Rebecca Cloudy is also a music student at UAA. Rebecca grew up in Kodiak and has traveled some before returning to Alaska to study music. She has a beautiful clear voice and has taken an interest in the jazz masters. She’s always wanted to sing jazz standards and now here’s her chance. She’s fluent in French and can sing is other languages as well.

More changes for Midnight Starlight. Bridget left Anchorage just after our fun day in Seward for their Music and Arts Festival. She’s off to Portland to see how life is outside Alaska.  It’s been wonderful having her and her great family be part of our lives.

Our next major performance is at the Seward Music and Arts Festival Sept 18 & 19.

It's hard to describe how much we're going to miss Kirsten. Her husband Ethan has finished his residency at Providence hospital here in Anchorage and they've moved to Spokane WA. We all knew this time would come. Having her perform with us has been wonderful. She is truly a special talent.

Make your plans to travel to Seldovia for their  Summer Solstice Music Festival.  We played this event last year with Siol and this year Midnight Starlight will be the closing act with dancing to follow.  Two weeks later we'll be back for a special 4th of July weekend show on Friday night,
July 2ond. for more information: CLICK HERE

Those of you who attended our Valentines Day Concert know exactly what I mean when I say it was the best one yet.  The 4-As were great partners and everyone performed with that special thing that happens sometimes in live musical events. Bridget and Kirsten were wonderful- especially their duets at the end. What a great finale.

Our next event is going to be a spring dance. Stay tuned for details.

Midnight Starlight’s new CD!
Recorded live at the Marston Theater in Anchorage by CJ Wilson with sound by Lucy Peckham.  This recording includes our newest members- Bridget’s fabulous singing and John’s soulful tenor sax.. Kirsten does some sophisticated new tunes as well.  This new CD has a great sound. Come by the Organic Oasis on any Wednesday or the Corsair on any Thursday or call (907) 688-1066. We’ve shipped quite a few out of town.

Friday at 3 with Bridget
Saturday at 3 with Kirsten

We just finished recording. We'll have something ready soon.

When the Dancing Bears contacted us about playing a dance I was really excited. This is going to be fun! The Bears have always had the reputation of being the best (and most enthusiastic) dancers in Anchorage. The musicians in town all recognize the Dancing Bear’s tradition of supporting live (as opposed to canned) music.
We’re working on bringing in a very tasty (not loud) drummer for the occasion. We’ll be playing mostly swing. (also some Latin, ballads, and bossa novas)

What: Swing Dance
When:  Friday, October 24
Where: Romig Middle School
Time: 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM

It’s fall and things are definitely happening. In addition to our regular Wednesday nights at the Organic Oasis and Thursday nights at the Corsair, we will be performing at several private functions in October including the Museum downtown.

I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of using one art form to describe another. With Meg Anderson’s expertise as an artist we get to explore the idea of using art to describe music on the front page of our website. Let us know what you think.

It’s been a great summer for Midnight Starlight. In addition to playing for graduations and weddings and performing at the Seldovia Summer Solstice Music Festival, we were the opening band at the popular festival, Augustfest. This was Bridget’s  maiden voyage as principle singer for the group. We flirted with the idea of traveling to Sisters Or. for their jazz festival. Something to look forward to next year.  It’s been very satisfying to see and hear the progress of both Kirsten and Bridget.

MIDNIGHT STARLIGHT IN THE ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS
Anchorage Daily News photographer and journalist  Marc Lester stopped by the Organic Oasis in October. He’s working on a story about the jazz scene in Anchorage. He spent most of the evening talking to Tom, Liz, James and Kirsten; listening to the band and taking photos.  The article will be in the Sunday Features section November 10.
