I recently acquired a copy of "The Chess Sacrifice" by Vukovic. Vukovic, familiar to all serious players for his "The Art of Attack in Chess", wrote
an excellent companion volume indeed! An excellent layout mixed with quality annotations make "The Chess Sacrifice" a worthy addition to any chess library.
Anyway, enough with the book review--onto our quiz material. Both examples are from "The Chess Sacrifice" and feature an early game of two future world champions.
Enjoy--Nimzo!

White to play: Obviously, Schmid has sacrificed a piece to open lines around the opposing monarch. But look how well Petrosian is protecting each sensitive sqaure near his king. But is it enough protection? Your task is to find the mate-in-five.

Black to play: The position looks grim for Somers--his pieces are out of play and his king exposed. Your task is to find the mate-in-several!
Hint: As in the earlier quiz, notice where all the attacker's rooks are and keep in mind that a "quiet" move is needed at some point.
