Windborne Farm Alpacas
Windborne
Farm Alpacas is a
family run Alaskan business operated since 1994 by the Newman family.
We are located in south central Alaska along the Matanuska River basin.
Nestled against the foot of Lazy Mountain, a small peak in the Chugach Mountain
Range, the farm offers easy access to Anchorage and the Northwest regional
alpaca market.
While
beginning with just four alpacas we currently have over twenty.
Yet in spite of the burgeoning farm, animal health and husbandry remain a
priority. While glacial winds
buffet the area most of the winter and snow covers the pastures for many months
out of the year, the alpacas grow dense thick coats of wonderful alpaca fiber. Each
year Jan and Tom shear the animals harvesting dozens of pounds of wonderful
fiber. Jan spends much of the winter
months spinning, knitting and felting the fiber into both fanciful and practical
creations. Tom has a creative outlet as well.
The barns, hay storage, pens and the labyrinth of fences has been his
design. It all works like a well oiled
machine. Our three children, Riley, Mariah
and Kearney also provide lots of
hands on help, including herding, toe nail trimming, loading, and halter
training. Not to mention daily feeding chores.
We work hard at promoting alpacas and the lifestyle they offer. We know alpacas are not right for everyone and we talk with our potential clients and discuss honestly what is involved financially as well as emotionally in raising livestock. The business of raising alpacas is but one part of the picture, the animals themselves, is quite another. We readily share with anyone interested, facts about alpacas and their fiber. We believe in an educated buyer - we were once first time alpaca buyers ourselves and we know what is expected of us as sellers: honesty, education, and integrity.
